Native Southern Magnolias
Bigleaf Magnolia
Native. Magnolia macrophylla Bigleaf Magnolia. Limited quantities. Bigleaf Magnolia is best known for the huge oblong-obovate leaves which are the largest simple leaves of any North American native tree. Foliage is bright green on top and silver-gray underneath. Fragrant, cup shaped flowers bloom in early summer. Blooms are white with a pale pink base. Red seed pods appear after flowering.
‘Bracken’s Brown Beauty’ Magnolia
Native. Magnolia grandiflora ‘Bracken’s Brown Beauty’ Southern magnolia. Evergreen tree 20′ – 30′. A more compact southern magnolia for small landscapes with a pyramidal growing habit with an oval crown. ‘Bracken’s Brown Beauty’ has the oblong, leathery textured leaves which Southern Magnolia is known for. Foliage is glossy, dark green on top with a cinnamon brown underside. In the spring and ‘Bracken’s Brown Beauty’ produces large, creamy white, fragrant saucer shaped flowers. Primary bloom is in late spring with sporadic blooming throughout the summer. A useful landscape plant as a tall, dense privacy screen, specimens or back of a border tree.
‘D.D. Blanchard’ Magnolia
Native Magnolia grandiflora ‘D.D. Blanchard’ Southern magnolia. Evergreen tree 50′. Large, glossy evergreen leaves with rusty orange brown undersides, lighter than other southern magnolia cultivars. ‘D.D. Blanchard’ is an evergreen tree with a compact, pyramidal growth habit. Flowers are creamy white, very fragrant and globe shaped. ‘D.D. Blanchard’ may be used in a landscape as a tall, dense privacy screen, specimens or back of a border tree.
‘Kay Parris’ Magnolia
Native. Magnolia grandiflora ‘Kay Parris’ Southern Magnolia 20′. A fast growing flowering tree with the classic white flowers of a southern magnolia. Compact, upright growth. ‘Kay Parris’ has bright green leaves which are very glossy while the undersides are a stunning deep orange brown. The smaller size makes it ideal for a small space landscape or yard.
‘Little Gem’ Magnolia
Native. Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’ Dwarf southern magnolia. Evergreen tree 20′ – 25′. Evergreen tree with pyramidal shape and smaller, dark green foliage with a rusty brown underside. ‘Little Gem’ has a very compact narrow form, making it useful for smaller gardens. It blooms at a very young age with primary bloom is in late spring then sporadic blooming throughout the summer. Large white flowers are fragrant and showy. ‘Little Gem’ is a popular choice for Georgia gardens.
Sweetbay Magnolia
Native. Magnolia virginiana sweetbay, swampbay, or swamp magnolia Evergreen Tree 20′ – 25′. Medium to fast growing. Evergreen to semi-evergreen, medium green leaves have silver underside which has a frosted appearance. The foliage of Sweetbay is a lighter green than Southern Magnolia cultivars. The bright scarlet red seeded fruit which ripens in late summer attractive to birds. Large flowers of Sweetbay are creamy white and very fragrant with a light lemony scent.

‘Ann’ Lily Magnolia
Magnolia liliiflora ‘Ann’ Lily Magnolia 8′-15 . An early spring blooming magnolia with purple-pink blooms that appear before foliage emerges. ‘Ann’ magnolia is part of the f the ‘Girl Series’, a group of trees developed to resist late frosts.
‘Butterflies’ Magnolia
Fragrant. Magnolia ‘Butterflies’ deciduous 15′ -20′ with large, yellow flowers. ‘Butterflies’ is an unusual magnolia tree due to the bright yellow blossoms in spring. ‘Butterflies’ is heat and cold tolerant, as well as will tolerate a little shade. Yellow flowers appear before leaves.
‘Galaxy’ Lily Magnolia
Magnolia x ‘Galaxy’ Lily magnolia 30-35′, deciduous. Bright green foliage. A heavy bloomer with of large, reddish purple flowers late in the season, ‘Galaxy’ is a strong grower with an upright form. It may be easily trained as standard.
‘Jane’ Magnolia
Magnolia x ‘Jane’ Japanese magnolia. Deciduous 10′ – 15′. Hardy shrub or small tree, ‘Jane’ is a member of the ‘Little Girl’ series of Magnolias. Blooms in late spring to avoid frost damage. Flowers appear before the foliage and are showy a reddish purple color on the outside with a tint of white on the inside. Blooms are large and tulip shape with a light fragrance. Foliage is deep green with a slight leathery appearance. ‘Jane’ is a great pick as an accent shrub, small specimen tree or or mixed garden.
Star Magnolia ‘Centennial Blush’
Fragrant. Magnolia stellata ‘Centennial Blush’ Star Magnolia 15′-25′. In spring, pink tinged buds open to large, fragrant white flowers. ‘Centennial Blusy’ is a prolific bloomer with flower buds formed at almost every node yielding a fantastic floral display of delicate white covering the entire plant. In late summer, attractive, reddish green seed pods form, opening reveal pink, red, or orange seeds.
Star Magnolia ‘Royal Star’
Fragrant. Magnolia stellata ‘Royal Star’ Star Magnolia. Deciduous small tree 10′ – 15′. May be grown in shrub form in a large, oval shape or as a small tree with a spreading, rounded crown. ‘Royal Star’ is very showy in bloom. In early spring, fragrant flowers appear before the foliage. The blossoms are star like, double white and have a slight pink tint. In late summer ‘Royal Star’ produces seeds in greenish pods which split open during fall.
