Quan Yin (also Kwan Yin, Kuanyin; in pinyin, Guanyin) is a common deity seen on altars in Chinese temples. In Sanskrit her name is Padma-pani, or “Born of the Lotus.” Quan Yin is a loved Buddhist god and seen as a model of Chinese beauty. Quan Yin was originally male until the early part of the 12th century. She evolved from an Indian bodhisattva, Avalokiteshvara, who chose to stay on earth to aid the suffering rather than experience Nirvana. One of the many tales told of Quan Yin is that she was a Buddhist who earned the right to enter Nirvana upon death. However, while standing before the gates of Paradise she heard a cry of anguish from the earth below. She renounced her reward of eternal bliss but instead went back to tend to the suffering. In China she is seen as the goddess of mercy.
