The Elms in Newport, RI was the summer residence of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind. Begun in 1898, the house was modeled after the stunning 18th century French chateau d’Asnieres outside Paris. Done in Classical Revival style, the elaborate ground and gardens were made up of The Elms dining room terraces, a park of specimen trees and a lavish lower garden featuring fountains, marble pavilions, a sunken garden and carriage house. Recently The Elms gardens have been restored.
