BERRIES & SUNFLOWERS
PLEASE
NOTE: 10 June 2008 - It is with
much regret that the farm has come to the conclusion to suspend all
summer related "pick your own" activities indefinitely (sunflowers will
be available beginning mid September). While the farm has
experienced tremendous enthusiasm and support for this activity from
countless families we have faced numerous environmental obstacles which
must be addressed. Please rest assured that we do not intend to
permanently retire this activity and the "pick your own" restructuring
plan has already begun! We are moving the location of our plants
to a more suitable area on the farm. It is our intention to allow
the plants several years to re-establish themselves in their new locale
before we begin harvesting again.
The decision to suspend summer picking activities is based largely around managing our water needs most efficiently. Our region has become notably drier over the last five years and water conservation is of utmost importance to our operations. Despite the circumstances we have been battling with our summer crops we are pleased to announce that your support for our fall and winter activities has been tremendous! We continue to see many friendly familiar and new faces each year. We wish the best for you all this summer and look forward to seeing you again soon! PICK YOUR OWN Throughout the summer months at the Kinsey Family Farm we offer you the opportunity to walk through our continuously expanding pick your own blueberry patch. In an effort to extend the berry picking season from mid June until late July we grow and sell several different varieties of blueberry bushes. Our berries are sold by the gallon and we are happy to provide a "picking container" for you. Please bring a bag to place your berries in after picking. Be sure to come early as your biggest competitors will most likely be the "early birds"! In addition to our blueberry patch, you are also welcome to come cut sunflowers out of the field or pick up a bouquet from the barn throughout the fall. Please be advised that sunflowers last the longest when picked while the centers are still green. In addition to your scissors, you may also want to bring your camera and a butterfly guide along with you as the photo opportunities can be quite remarkable! Sunflowers are sold for 50¢ per stem or $5 per dozen. Please remember that flowers stay the freshest when they are placed in water shortly after picking.
