American Hornbeam Musclewood
Native. Carpinus caroliniana American Hornbeam 20′ – 30′ deciduous tree. American Hornbeam or Musclewood is a shade tolerant, mid size deciduous tree. American Hornbeam naturally occurs in forests as an understory tree which makes it perfect for a woodland edge or shady side of the house. American Hornbeam has a unique, distinctive muscle like trunk and twisting branches which gives it the common name of musclewood. This tree is truly unusual for the home garden. The wood is extremely hard and attractive. Leaves are dark green in the summer season, changing to orange, yellow and red in fall.
European Hornbeam ‘Pinocchio’
Carpinus betulus European Hornbeam ‘Pinocchio’ 50′ – 80′ columnar. A tall, deciduous shade tree featuring a narrow upright habit, low maintenance requirements, columnar form and golden fall foliage. European Hornbeam ‘Pinocchio’ has an attractive, columnar form featuring dense branches when young. It will grow into a broad cone shape as it matures. Dark green foliage turns yellow orange for fall. Great for narrow space landscapes and may be planted as street trees.
